Peanut: The New App Connecting New Mums

Loneliness is an experience familiar to many new mums. Even though smartphones have increased our connection to the internet and social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, these channels can sometimes amplify feelings of isolation instead of easing them.

Navigating motherhood for the first time is challenging enough without the added pressure of comparing oneself to “Insta-mums” who seem to effortlessly manage beauty, style, and family life. Despite being constantly online, many new mums report feeling more isolated, especially when adjusting to motherhood on their own.

This was the inspiration for Peanut, a new app created specifically for mothers. The founder’s experiences as a new mum led to the development of an app aimed at connecting women who may be seeking companionship, support, or simply a friendly connection in their area.

With her background in online dating (having contributed to the creation of popular apps like Bumble), the founder designed Peanut using a familiar swiping mechanism, similar to Tinder. A swipe up sends a wave to a potential friend, while a swipe down skips their profile. The app helps connect women with similar interests or children of the same age, ideal for arranging playdates.

Peanut users can sign up, swipe, chat, join group discussions, and even arrange meet-ups. The app’s interface is user-friendly, designed to be accessible with one hand, allowing new mums to navigate it while holding their baby. It’s free to use and has already attracted 400,000 users in London within its first 10 weeks, with interest growing globally.

Peanut fills a gap for mums, providing a dedicated platform beyond the usual late-night online forums, enabling new mothers to find the kind of support they need, whether it’s a quick chat, detailed parenting discussions, or arranging real-life meetups.
